NEWS & NOTES

2/19/2024

  • Hello Everyone,
  • The mass shootings in our country are horrific.  Let’s all just do the right things and pray for those who are grieving.
  • The North Dakota High School Activities (NDHSAA) held its State Wrestling Tournament at the FARGODOME last week.  It was a cozy setting of eight mats with great seating and sightlines all around.  Over 300 wrestlers, numerous coaches and table workers on the floor together can be chaotic at times.
  • While wrestling is one of the most physically demanding sports in which one can compete, the numbers of high school girls competing continues to rise as is the quality of their wrestling.  Welcome and good job girls.
  • As with all competitions, emotions come into play too.  The mental preparation, physical conditioning and the exertion of the match itself, bring about an “explosion” of emotions for both wrestlers, “The thrill of victory & the agony of defeat” (Jim McKay, ABC).  Tears are common for both boys and girls as they “leave it all on the mat”.  Congratulations to all.
  • Tournament managers make the event happen, coaches build the programs and referees provide order to the matches.  Thank you everybody.
  • It was a real pleasure for me to be there as it became a reunion of sort too.  I was Blessed to visit with a number of people I hadn’t see in thirty-plus years, it was wonderful.  When an “old friend” comes to mind,  take a minute to call or text, it could turnout to be the best part of your day along with hers/his.
  • The weather has been great for walking, jogging and biking which often doesn’t happen this time of the year, be sure to enjoy the nice weather while it is here.
  • Remember pets come with responsibilities, please pick-up their “you-know-what”.  Thank you.
  • Thanks to all who provide and proof material for this article.
  • “Ethics is knowing what is right and integrity is doing what is right when no one is watching”.”   ~ Anonymous
  • Blessings, Pray, be Grateful and Respectful,

 NEWS & NOTES

2/12/2024

  • Super Bowl LVIII Parties:  $17.3 Billion was expected to be spent on last weekend’s parties equating to $86.04 per person.  At 1:00 PM Sunday “on the internet”, ticket prices ranged from $5,709.00 to $196,785.00 though they were expected to be a bit less nearer to game time; Oh boy!  The cost of a 30-second commercial was $7 Million!  Oh, shortly before game time the “over under” bet on the length of the National Anthem was 90.5 seconds …. Really?  I hope you enjoyed.
  • Even though temperatures are a little cooler now, “we have a lot of good weather in the bank“.  More good news, we are nearing 10-hours of daylight and a higher sun is warming surfaces even when the temperature is below freezing.
  • Friday evening the Valley City Fire Department (VCFD) held its Annual Awards Banquet with good food, fellowship and entertainment.  Years of service pins were presented …. some of the veterans have more years of service than some of the younger firefighters are old!!  Spouses, significant others and families sacrifice and provide great support allowing firefighters to serve; thank you to all.  Entertainment was provided by Mylo Hatzenbuhler who presented his wholesome family show ….. I laughed often!  Following his show, he came out of character to sing “Happy Birthday“ and a heartwarming rendition of “Amazing Grace” honoring Karen Magnuson.
  • *Remember, Wednesday is Valentine’s Day.
  • Gosh, the high school and university winter sports seasons are winding down already.  For many of us “older folks” time just seems to go so fast.  This Thursday through Saturday is the NDHSAA State Wrestling Tournament in the Fargodome; it is quite a sight, check it out.
  • While we have had comfortable weather, snowfall in the mountains feeding the Missouri River is below average.  More snow would be beneficial for our power generation and costs.  Pray for snow.
  • Thanks to all who provide and proof material for this article.

NEWS & NOTES

2/5/2024

  • Hello Folks,
  • Do you donate blood?  Every 2-seconds someone in the United States needs blood and/or platelets.  Approximately 29,000 units of red blood cells are needed daily and nearly 16 million blood components are transfused annually in the United States.  You can be a life saver by donating, please do.
  • Our nicer than normal weather is bringing walkers, joggers and bikers out-and-about.  If you haven’t been getting out, even if it is just to take some “deep cleansing breaths”, do it while weather permits.  A friend said he is grateful to be getting out again as when he gets some walking, he feels so much better.  BE SAFE; wear reflective apparel and FACE TRAFFIC.  Many drivers are looking at phones and you are in danger when they are behind you.
  • Congratulations to Jon Skalicky who was recently promoted to the rank of Sergeant with the North Dakota Highway Patrol.  Way-to-go Jon.
  • February is Black History Month.  Many notable figures have influenced our history over the years, Martin Luther King in Civil Rights, Chuck Berry in music and Jackie Robinson in sports to name a few.  Surfing the web will provide you with a plethora of interesting information.
  • Valley City Parks and Recreation is beginning a card playing session with coffee and treats Thursday mornings at 10:00.  There are many card games available and one does NOT have to be a member to play.  Try it!
  • Boy Scout Troop 560 held an Eagle Court of Honor recognizing Teddy Hochhalter & Levi Trader for earning Distinguished Eagle Scout Awards.  Nationally 6% of scouts reach Eagle Scout Rank, though recently Troop 560 had a time where over 70% achieved said rank. Levi, Teddy and all Eagle Scouts, you are to be proud.

 NEWS & NOTES

1/29/2024

  • Hi Everbody,
  • I hope you have been enjoying this stretch of nice weather with which we have been Blessed.  Please try to drain water where possible to prevent some of the icing.
  • This is legitimate!  Moore Engineering,  as per the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality, will be surveying us concerning our water service line materials.  Within the next few weeks we will be receiving postcards explaining the survey.  We will be directed to access the survey through the QR code or website.
  • Saturday, Valley City Public Schools hosted about 14 teams for a Robotics Tournament. The robots these teams build are amazing, congratulations to all and thank you for visiting Valley City.
  • Last week at VCSU there was a very nice breakfast for the VCSU Facilities Services and the Valley City Electrical Departments. The event was recognizing the collaboration of VCSU and the city during emergencies and other times of need.  Great job everyone.
  • * Giving Hearts Day is February 8th.  It is a great opportunity to maximize your charitable giving as many charities have matching fund agreements available when donations are made during the specified time.  Research your favorite charities to see how you can maximize your gifts.
  • Near the end of February, delegates representing Missouri River Energy Services (MRES) and American Public Power Association (APPA), will be in Washington DC visiting legislators  concerning “all things power”.  Regional transmission, permitting reform and tax exempt financing are a few challenges facing the industry.  As time draws near I will share more information as these issues affect us.
  • Are you aware of the Chamber Eblast?  The Eblast offers job service, business ads and numerous community activities that could serve your needs.  Please see: https://valleycitychamber.com/
